Here is the plan for Saturday morning:
Volunteer? If you want to volunteer please sign up here (slots are limited): http://vols.pt/XqiFe7
What Time? We will start registering and picking at 8am and hope to be done by 11:00am.
Where? Take I-40 West to Wildorado Exit 49 (20 min west of Soncy) Turn left or south on FM 809 and go under the underpass. Go 3 miles south on FM 809 and the entrance to the field will be on your left. We will have a sign about 1/2 mile before field and a GREEN Snack Pak 4 Kids sign hanging at the entrance.
What will we do? As you enter the field we will have a limited number of t-shirts available in adult sizes only for $10. Have cash available if you want to purchase. You will then go to the BLUE field. Register and sign waiver. Learn a few tips about picking corn. Be assigned a section of the 2 acres to work in teams of 25-30 people. Be prepared to walk.
What do you bring? Sunscreen, bug spray, gloves, one or two 5 gallon buckets per person (Home Depot has stock) put name on it, long sleeve shirt and pants optional due to corn stalks, we do not recommend flip flops. You might bring an extra pair of shoe to wear home – others might be a little muddy!
What will we supply? Water, bathrooms, roasted corn, Chick fil-A chicken biscuits (limited supply), Dairy Queen Treats, and a lot of fun.
Plan: We will work in teams and gather corn in 5 gallon buckets that will be picked up on four-wheelers and trailers. We will dump the gators in trailers. We will then bag the corn in paper bags 10 ears/bag and place in large bins that will be loaded into the truck. We have 2 large refrigerated trucks donated by Affiliated Foods that will store the corn to keep it fresh.
What if it rains? That would be a blessing to the farmers. We will send out an email if we need to change plans due to weather so be sure and check your e-mail Saturday morning before you leave. Also check our Facebook page for update: https://www.facebook.com/SnackPak4Kids
There is no doubt we will make changes as we go and this will be a learning process, but at the end of the day we are serving people in our community.
Thank you for volunteering to help us harvest corn.
