We are harvesting corn today. The 4th Annual Aww Shucks Corn Harvest 2016 harvest will be Saturday August 13th from 8am-10am for AISD staff and students only. You must use this link to register and volunteer Register Here to Volunteer. The corn harvest is limited to the first 250 volunteers. As we get closer to the date we will send more details to our registered volunteers via the email you use to register. Thank you for volunteering.
Here is the plan for Saturday morning:
What Time? We will start registering and picking at 8am and hope to be done by 10:30am.
Where? Take I-40 West to Wildorado Exit 49 (20 min west of Soncy) Turn left or south on FM 809 and go under the underpass. Go 4 miles south on FM 809 and the entrance to the field will be on your left. We will have a sign about 1/2 mile before field and a GREEN Snack Pak 4 Kids sign hanging at the entrance.
What will we do? As you enter the field we will guide you to the parking area. You MUST register and sign a waiver (mandatory), learn a few tips about picking corn and be assigned a section of the 2 acres to work in teams of 40-50 people. Be prepared to walk. If you signed up to bag corn we need you to stay in the area where you registered and we will assign you a job in that area.
What will we supply? Water, bathrooms, fresh roasted corn, Chick fil-A chicken biscuits (limited supply), and a lot of fun. What do you bring? Sunscreen, bug spray, gloves, one or two 5 gallon buckets per person (Home Depot has stock) put name on it, long sleeve shirt and pants optional due to corn stalks, we do not recommend flip flops. You might bring an extra pair of shoe to wear home – others might be a little muddy!
Plan: We will work in teams and gather corn in 5 gallon buckets that will be picked up on gators. We will dump the gators in trailers. We will then bag the corn in paper bags 10 ears/bag and place in large bins that will be loaded into the truck. We have 1 large refrigerated truck donated by Affiliated Foods that will store the corn to keep it fresh.
What if it rains? That would be a blessing to the farmers. We will send out an email if we need to change plans due to weather so be sure and check your e-mail Saturday morning before you leave.
